Jankovic looking strong

Posted in Tennis by info on the June 1st, 2007

Jelena Jankovic is into as short as 3/1 for French Open glory after underlining her claims by defeating Venus Williams 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the third round on Friday. The Serbian, who has never previously ventured beyond the 3rd round at Roland Garros before, looked solid in the first set and just needed one break of serve to move into a 1-0 advantage.

Williams did level the match as she pushed the fourth seed hard, but Jankovic notched up six straight games in the final set to reach the fourth round.

Blue Square now offer just 3/1 about her claiming the title, with no better than 4/1 available elsewhere.

Coria still Fav

Posted in Tennis by info on the February 28th, 2007

Recent injury worries shouldn’t hamper 15/8 Guillermo Coria’s ace clay court winning run when he serves it up at this week’s Hamburg Masters.

It’s been almost a year since the waspish Argentine last tasted defeat on the dirt and reports that he has been struggling with an abdominal strain since Monte Carlo in April are nothing to worry about according to the firm’s tennis man Paul Moody.

“I’m assuming Coria’s strain was minor and I’m certainly I’m not looking to lay him big here where all of his main dangers are in the other side of the draw,” he said.

“Mariano Zabaleta gave him a tough match in Paris last year, and while him or Tommy Robredo could provide an early guide to his fitness, it’s not hard to see him extending his impressive winning run on the clay.”

Coria’s last defeat on clay came against big-serving Dutchman Martin Verkerk in the semis at Roland Garros.

Moody said that the late withdrawal of Juan Carlos Ferrero could only enhance Coria’s chances of extending his winning sequence and that even in-form Carlos Moya 5/1 might struggle to get near the 22-year-old this week.

“Moya would appear the main danger on current form in the other half that also contains Federer and Safin but while I was pleased to see him finally get a Masters notch on his bedpost this year in Rome, I’m not totally convinced that the slow conditions at Hamburg will play to his strengths and am looking at him more as a Paris contender now,” he said.

For value seekers Moody put up 33/1 Andrei Pavel as someone to give punters a decent run for their money.

“Pavel was unlucky to come up against a Moya in possibly his best form ever in Rome and the Romanian has every chance to come through what looks the weakest quarter of the draw before a likely face-off against Coria.”

FEDERER 3/1 FOR GRAND SLAM

Posted in Tennis by info on the February 26th, 2007

Roger Federer is 3/1, from 6/1, to win the Grand Slam, according to Ladbrokes, following his straight-sets win over Fernando Gonzalez in the Australian Open final.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: “We’ve laid plenty of Federer for the Grand Slam and the fact he captured the Australian Open without dropping a set doesn’t bode well for us. He was, not for the first time, the worst result in the book.

“Our best chance of getting the gamble beaten will be at Roland Garros (French Open), supposedly Federer’s weakest surface (clay).

“It’s only January but we’re losing sleep already.”

Federer was certainly in confident mood about the French Open after his 7-6 6-4 6-4 win, which meant he secured the title without dropping a set - the first man to do so at Grand Slam level since 1980.

He said: “The French Open is obviously the next big one for me. That’s going to be very interesting to see how I’m going to do there.

“I’ve made one step further every year now. I went from semis to finals. I got closer to Rafa (Nadal) as well. I think it’s going to be a very interesting.”

Coral also priced up at 3/1 following Federer’s win, but were soon forced to cut that to 5/2.

Coral’s Simon Clare said: “Countless great players over many decades have failed to achieve the Grand Slam, but many punters watching Federer this week have been piling their cash on him doing the Grand Slam this year.”

Meanwhile, Ladbrokes make the Swiss ace just 6/5 to contest every Grand Slam final this year while he’s 5/2 to retain his Wimbledon title without dropping a set. Coral and William Hill go 4/1.

Ante-post, Federer had been 6/1 to do so in Melbourne.

The Magic Sign also have betting on how many Grand Slams he’ll win in 2007 and offer: Exactly one 10/1, Exactly two 9/4, Exactly three 11/10, All four 3/1.
