Bash the bookies - 8/1 for a new Harry Potter Book

Posted in Special Bets by info on the July 20th, 2007

Bookies are offering 8/1 that JK Rowling produces an eighth Harry Potter book before the end of 2008.

On Wednesday Hills closed the betting on which character will kill Harry Potter in the seventh book, following a flurry of activity when they received multiple three figure bets in a half hour period that Harry would cause his own demise.

At the close of betting Harry was the 2/5 favourite with Lord Voldemort 4/1 and Professor Snape offered at 6/1. “If Harry dies it will cost us a small fortune - as a result we will be queuing for a copy on Friday night and will probably be the only people turning straight to the back page,” said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

You Bet-winehouse Better Than The Monkeys-but Will She Turn Up?

Bookies William Hill have been forced to cut the price of Amy Winehouse winning the Nationwide Mercury Prize from 4/1 to 5/2 as the early money comes in for the troubled star. Of the outsiders the Klaxons have been the best backed and are 8/1 from 10/1.

“Despite her recent erratic behaviour punters seem convinced that Amy Winehouse is a good thing for the Mercury prize but personally I think the 3/1 that she will not appear at the award ceremony is a better price, said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Bookmakers William Hill were shocked to see the Arctic Monkeys nominated for a second year running after being stung for £50,000 when they won the 2006 prize and have immediately installed them as joint 4/1 favourites to make history and win the prize twice in a row.

Of the outsiders the industry money seems to be coming for Bat For Lashes at 10/1.

“After last year’s losses we are hoping for the judges to choose a rank outsider, which has been known to happen in the past, but there are obvious favourites in the Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse”, said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Hill’s have massive liabilities on temperatures to top 100f after a string of four figure wagers were struck during the heat wave in April and despite the recent deluge they remain 3/1 that the golden mark is reached this year.

Bookmakers William Hill have seen a surge of superstitious bets as punters hope to cash in on Saturday’s 07/07/07 date.

Bets include Jason and Lorna McMullen from Stevenage who have wagered that their baby will be born on 07/07/07 at 7/1, that the child will be brought into the world at seven minutes past seven at 77/1 and that the baby will weigh exactly 7lbs & 7oz at 777/1.

Jason is the MD of a air-conditioning company called A1R services and said, We are not particularly superstitious but as soon as we saw the due date we thought it would be fun to have a wager and have our fingers & legs crossed as the baby will have to be slightly late,.

“It is a massive betting week and anything with a seven in it is sure to be well backed all day but luckily number seven in big race of the day is the 150/1 outsider ‘Champery’ so we should be OK there, said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Hill’s have also accepted a bet that the World will end on Saturday at odds of 7,777,777/1 for a stake of £7 the pessimistic punter from Barnes does not expect to collect his winnings but said he would be smug for eternity!

Weiss-man places bet on UFO’s appearing tomorrow

Londoner George Weiss has placed a bizarre wager with William Hill that could yield the 66 year-old one million Euro. George believes that on the 7th of July 2007 (07/07/07) UFO’s will descend on Earth to spread a cosmic message around the World.

The eccentric thinks that this cosmic event will coincide with Al Gore’s Live Earth concerts. The events, which will take place tomorrow, in London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, and George believes that the concert goers will not only see stars of the entertainment world, but other beings from stars across the universe.

Weiss is so convinced that this cosmic event is going to happen that he ventured into a William Hill’s shop and placed a bet of €200 at odds of 5000/1 that UFO’s will be spotted over at least three of Al Gore’s concert venues on the 7th of July.

George said “I can’t believe the odds that they gave me were so good. In my mind I know there is something cosmic going to happen on that day, and I think there is a good chance that we could see visitors from another planet.

Harry Potter to meet his maker?

Posted in Special Bets by info on the July 4th, 2007

In just three weeks time Harry Potter fans will finally get the answer to the question on all their lips - will Harry meet his maker?

The betting certainly suggests that Harry will be finished off in the final book , with bookies William Hill closing the betting on Harry being killed off nearly six months ago after almost all bets placed were for him to die rather than survive.

“Punters are convinced that Harry will be killed off based on three main clues, firstly JK has said a least one major character will be killed off, secondly the final book has ‘Deathly’ in the title and finally, and perhaps most interestingly, there are rumours circulating that Harry is the final Horcrux and therefore he will need to be sacrificed to ensure the demise of Lord Voldermort, said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Hills have been betting on the culprit for over six months and can reveal that punters are backing four main characters Lord Voldermort, Harry himself, Neville Longbottom and Professor Snape.

Neville has been by far the biggest mover in the market despite the fact that he is the most incompetent wizard of them all and has been cut from an original 25/1 to 6/1 in recent weeks based on persistant speculation that he is the chosen one, not Harry.

If Harry should survive the final book then Hills will refund all bets placed on the market.

Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams said: “Most of our punters’ galleons have been for the top four in the betting but the real movers in the market are Harry himself and Neville and I for one would be very surprised if it is not one of the pair!”

Kate And Wills 3/1 To Get Engaged

Posted in Special Bets by info on the June 25th, 2007

William Hill have seen a run of money for Prince William and Kate Middleton to get back together and Hill’s have cut the price of them getting engaged from 33/1 to 3/1 in the last few days.

“Punters are piling in based on the stories that the break-up has actually brought them closer together and punters are certainly hoping that William will decide that he has made a mistake and that they will get back together.

We thought we had saved ourselves £50,000 when they split but if they get back together it will be a massive turnaround and it could well cost us £100,000,” said Hills spokesman Rupert Adams.

Punters bash bookies as Queen wears cream for Ascot

Posted in Special Bets by info on the June 22nd, 2007

For the second year out of three, bookies William Hill have been stung by a huge gamble on the colour of the Queens hat on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot.

Having paid out more than £20,000 two years ago on a brown hat, Hills face another five figure pay out this year after Her Majesty sported a predominately cream hat today.

Hills spokeswoman Jennie Prest said, “It’s a fun market and usually just small stakes but we treating this market with increasing scepticism, as we’ve been subject to massive gambles two out of the last three years.

Once again some punters seem to have a crystal ball when it comes to knowing what the Queen may choose.”

“The biggest bet we laid on cream was £150 @ 5-1 but we’ve had dozens of other requests at smaller stakes and a number of new customers opening new accounts specifically just to have this bet.”

William Hill bet for the colour of the Queens Hat Ladies Day Royal Ascot 2008:
3-1 Blue,
5-1 Yellow,
6-1 Pink
6-1 Green
7-1 Cream / Beige
8-1 White
8-1 Black & White
