Grand National greats reunited at the William Hill Grand National preview
Exactly 40 years on from Foinavon’s shock 100-1 victory, in the 1967 National, jockeys from four decades will be reunited to talk about their Grand National experiences at the William Hill Grand National Preview in Birmingham, in association with the Midlands Racing Club on Tuesday 10th April.
John Buckingham, the rider of Foinavon, will be joined by Brian Fletcher, who twice rode Red Rum to victory and was also successful on Red Alligator, and the Racing Post’s editor Brough Scott, who himself rode in the world’s greatest steeplechase.
The three will be accompanied by over a dozen retired jockeys that have ridden in the National including Tim Norman, who rode Anglo to victory in 1966, and Bill Denson who rode in the 1947 National that was won by another 100-1 shot, Caughoo.
This historic evening will relive some of the most exciting races in the Grand National’s colourful past, including Foinavon’s victory and Red Rum’s triumphs, with the film footage shown on a big screen for the audience.
The second half of the evening will be a preview of the major races of this year’s Aintree meeting, with expert opinion from John Morris, author of ‘Jumping Prospects’ and betting news from sponsors William Hill’s PR man Ben Clarke.
The William Hill Grand National Preview, in association with the Midlands Racing Club, is being held at Stirchley United Working Men’s Club, Hazelwell Lane, Stirchley, Birmingham, B30 2PP on Tuesday 10th April. Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.45pm start and the cost (to non members) is £6.
There will also be an auction in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund during the evening and Brough Scott will be accepting a cheque from all the Midlands Racing Club’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the IJF.

John Smiths Grand National - Big support for Doire for National Glory
With the 2007 Cheltenham festival now no more than a memory all attention has turned to the 2007 flat season and the John Smiths Grand National.
Looking ahead to the Worlds most famous steeplechase Dun Doire was well supported on Monday morning with William Hill and now rates as the Leeds firm’s outright favourite for the John Smiths sponsored marathon.
Tony Martin’s eight year old, who was all out to beat Romaha over 3m 2f at Down Royal at the weekend, trades at 10-1 with Far From Trouble, Point Barrow and last years winner Numbersixvalverde the 12-1 second favourites.

Grand National Favourite injured at Uttoxeter
There was a major shake-up in the betting for the John Smith’s Grand National after ante-post favourite Nil Desperandum was fatally injured at Uttoxeter.
The 10-year-old, trained by Venetia Williams, broke a leg after jumping the eighth fence in the John Smith’s Midlands Grand National.
Williams said: “He shattered a pastern the second he landed. He jumped the fence fine and it just happened on landing.
“He has been a star of the season and jumping has been his forte.”
Nil Desperandum, a ready winner of the Eider Chase on his penultimate start, was favourite for the Aintree marathon at around 10/1 after finishing fourth and sixth in the last two runnings of the famous race.
He has been replaced at the head of the National market by Dun Doire, who was in action at Down Royal where he landed a hard-fought victory in the Tennent’s No.1 Chase.
The even-money favourite was all out to hold Romaha by three-quarters of a length.
Ladbrokes were unconvinced and left Tony Martin’s charge unchanged at 10/1.
Spokesman David Williams said: “Dun Doire did what he had to do but the performance hasn’t exactly sent us running for cover.
“We didn’t see anything that warranted shortening up the favourite.”
Christy Roche faces a race against time to get Far From Trouble ready for the Grand National.
“He was grand in Cheltenham on Sunday morning but prodded a foot joint which became infected,” said Roche.
“The horse has now had a lot of antibiotics and it’s going to be a race against time to get him ready for Aintree.
“It’s touch and go
Grand National Betting Overview

Bet365’s George Primarolo recently spoke about his thoughts on this year’s John Smiths Grand National.“I would expect the Irish pairing of Dun Doire and Far From Trouble to fight it out at the head of the market between now and April. Dun Doire has already fallen over the National fences though and Far From Trouble appeals a lot more as the likely winner. We are likely to see plenty of public support given the fact he should be partnered by Tony McCoy on the day. The eight year-old was cruising when coming to grief six out in the Irish Grand National last year but made no mistake when winning the Galway Plate four months later.
Christy Roche’s charge has already had a nice pipe-opener over hurdles recently and should he run well at the Cheltenham Festival, then he could well go off favourite. Our worst position at the moment is on Paul Nicholls’ Eurotrek but we’re more than happy to have this.
106 runners left for the 2007 Aintree Grand National
There are 106 runners left in the 2007 Aintree Grand National following the first foreit stage and Exotic Dancer and 2005 winner Hedgehunter still head the weights on 11st 12lb.
Current favourite Nil Desperandum heads the betting as Venetia Williams 10-year-old was very impressive in Newcastle’s Eider Chase at the end of February and is now a general 10-1 shot with the leading online bookies.
Last year’s champion, Numbersixvalverde is also on the list as are well-supported possibles for the April 14 feature include Christy Roche’s Far From Trouble, the Tony Martin-trained Dun Doire and David Pipe’s Little Brick.
Grand National Odds
In the last eighteen runnings of the Grand National Master Oats (1995) and Moorcroft Boy (1994) were the shortest priced favourites both being returned at 5/1. There have been seven 7/1 clear favourites in that time including the winners Hedgehunter (2005), Earth Summit (1998) and Rough Quest (1996) while 10/1 co favourites were returned in 2004 and 2001.Clan Royal is currently 7-1 clear favourite with VC Bet and their PR Manager Neal Wilkins believes their will be a contraction in those odds in the weeks leading up to the Aintree showpiece.
He commented “Clan Royal has been given a real chance by the handicapper this season and replays of last year’s race will remind many punters just
how well he was going when unluckily carried out.”
