William Hill have shortened the price of England winning the third test from 4/9 to 4/11 following support for the National side.

England are 4/11 to have a first innings lead with the West Indies offered at 2/1, Kevin Pietersen is 11/4 to be top England runscorer and Ryan Sidebottom is 9/2 to be the match top wicket taker.

England had five centurions in the first test and Hill’s offer 40/1 for the feat to be emulated in the second test.

Sri Lanka send England Tumbling

Posted in Cricket by info on the April 5th, 2007

England have slumped to 33/1 for the Cricket World Cup after a demoralising two-run defeat against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.Sri Lanka hit 235 off their 50 overs after a good bowling performance by England, and Michael Vaughan’s side were favourites come the break.

However, Vaughan departed early for no runs and it needed a 90-run partnership from Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen to get England back in contention.

As those two fell by the wayside it was left to Ravi Bopara and Paul Nixon to almost steer England to victory, Bopara hit a brave 52 before being bowled last ball when England needed just three runs to win.

Sri Lanka are now 7/2 with a host of layers and 3/1 with Stan James to win the World Cup.

Australia remain 6/5 favourites with New Zealand and South Africa available at 4/1.

South Africa in to 7/2

Posted in Cricket by info on the March 29th, 2007

South Africa and Sri Lanka have switched places in the betting for the Cricket World Cup following the Proteas’ latest victory.Graeme Smith’s side sealed a nervy one wicket win despite Lasith Malinga taking four wickets in an incredible four balls - and South Africa are now 7/2 from 9/2 with their opponents out to 5/1 from 4/1.

The Aussies who saw off the West Indies in a 103 run victory, are 6/5 from 5/4 with the home nation now 10/1 from 8/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: “South Africa were sweating and so were we - their opponents were a £100,000 loser for us.

He also added : “The Proteas are in reasonable shape, but the Aussies are beginning to look ominous.”

Duncan Fletcher 2/5 to stay put as punter put faith in Pietersen

Posted in General Betting, Cricket by info on the March 28th, 2007

Despite a number of reports that suggest Duncan Fletcher will leaving his position as England coach after the World Cup, bookies William Hill disagree and offer 2/5 that he is still England Coach when England play their first test against the West Indies in May and 7/4 that he is not.

Kevin Pietersen is the well backed 11/4 favourite to top score against Ireland on Friday, for which England are the red hot 1/12 favourites.

James Anderson and Andrew Flintoff are the 7/2 favourites to be the top wicket takers in the match and England are 1/3 to be knocked out of the World Cup at the super 8 stage and 12/1 to win.

“Fletcher has done an enormous amount for English cricket and despite a disappointing trip to Australia his position looks strong as far as we are concerned, said Hills spokesman Rupert Adams.

Sri Lanka on Fire

Posted in Cricket by info on the March 27th, 2007

The bookies are struggling to split South Africa and Sri Lanka ahead of their Super Eights clash on Wednesday - and we’re finding it a tough task too having flagged the pair up as our pre-tournament tips.

Of the two we’d have to say we’re happier with what we’ve seen so far from Sri Lanka.

They won three out of three to top Group B, including a hugely impressive 69-run victory over India in their last match - a result which all but eliminated Rahul Dravid’s side.

No team looks to have a better balanced bowling attack than Sri Lanka, with Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga presenting a real threat at the start of the innings while Muttiah Muralitharan - three for 41 against India - is the tournament’s most dangerous spinner.

On the batting front there was a slight concern that if the top four failed to fire then they could be in trouble but those fears seem unfounded judged on the performance against India when Sri Lanka posted 254-6 despite only Upul Tharanga of the leading quartet making more than 15.

The fielding too is far less of a worry now than it used to be, with the hard work put in by Tom Moody and fielding coach Trevor Penney starting to pay real dividends.

However it’s not as if we’ve suddenly given up on South Africa just because they were beaten by Australia at the weekend.

Far from it, but the one worry with Graeme Smith’s side is their lack of a genuine slow-bowling option and that could be a real factor in Guyana.

It’s been a race against time for organisers to get the Providence Stadium on the South American mainland ready in time and Wednesday’s match will be the first to be played there.

Officials have admitted it’s a guessing game as to how the pitch will play so the side with the wider bowling options is surely going to be at an advantage.

That’s undoubtedly Sri Lanka and at even money they have to be the call, especially as South Africa’s premier paceman Shaun Pollock comes into the match on the back of conceding an unheard of 83 runs in his ten overs against the Aussies - exactly the Proteas’ margin of defeat.

It might also be worth a small interest in Malinga picking up the man of the match award because his slingy action has caused all sorts of problems already in this World Cup.

He’s picked up seven victims at just 10.85 each in the tournament so far and took four wickets the last time this pair met in the Champions Trophy.

Judging by reports there’s got to be a chance the track is going to heavily favour the bowlers yet five of the top six in the man of the match betting are predominently batsmen.

Malinga is on offer at 14/1 and that looks a fair price given his exploits in the last couple of weeks and the fact that South Africa struggled when Shaun Tait produced inswinging yorkers for Australia at the weekend - exactly the sort of deliveries Malinga is producing on a regular basis
