Bookmakers William Hill face a potential six figure payout if Gordon Brown opts to call a snap General Election, and have halved the odds about that happening from 4/1 at the start of the weekend, to 2/1 favourite.

‘We have never seen a gamble like this before on the date of a General Election and are now looking at a six figure payout if Gordon Brown does as many political insiders are anticipating and goes for an early Election’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills now also make 2008 and 2009 2/1 chances to be the year of the next General Election, with 2010 or beyond out to 6/1.

Labour are 4/7 favourites to win the General Election whenever it takes place with William Hill who make the Conservatives 5/4 and the Lib Dems 80/1.

The chances of a Hung Parliament are rated at 6/4.
